My Quest to Be Convience (Food) Free...

When my husband lost his job, I began delving into ways to cut our grocery budget, that was already slim. When we had two children, we made it on $50 to $70 weekly including household goods and diapers. Now we have added two children to that mix, one in diapers and groceries have gone through the roof.
Since convience , packaged items wre mainly where our money went, I began searching for recipes on how to make some of those items from scratch. Which has since snowballed into almost complete scratch cooking. It started with homemade cream soup mixes, homemade baby wipe spray (though I still use disposable diapers)buying a bread machine and a yogurt maker and many others. I plan on sitting down and making a list of all the condiments, breads, convience items, cake mixes, pudding mixes, etc and finding a good recipe for all those items. The grocery budget has increased a bit, but the quest is still alive. I made my own hamburger buns the other night and they turned out great tasting even though they didn't "look" all that great...that's gonna take some work.
I'm on the prowl today for some good beverage recipes. My kiddos love cokes, and since I buy them for my husband to take to work with him, the kids sneak plenty. They aren't huge water drinkers and Kool Aid doesn't do it for them most days, but I want them to consume more juice and water. So that's my mission this week.
If you're at all interested in making stuff you use often from scratch, this morning I stumbled upon the motherload! This link takes you to a page full of Make it Yourself recipes.

Have a blessed day!

  1. Great post friend!
Drinks for kids, try sweet decaf tea, raspberry tea, strawberry lemonade, flavored water from things at home! My kids love just plain ice water and they also like to put water in their cups and then put those in the fridge so its good and cold try that maybe? Also we love hot tea here, sassafras tea, homemade rootbeer,I also let them have 100 juice SOMETIMES not much except for my homemade grape juice they can have that all they want, and we do more of the Cranberry juices since its so good for you!
    love ya!

  2. I love me some cranberry juice...I also like Ruby Red Grapefruit...Ocean Spray makes one that blends Red Grapefruit and Pomegranate Juice and well, possibly it's laced with crack, cause it's highly addictive. I hadn't thought about the flavored tea...they like some of those mix ins, but the only thing I dislike more than alot of sugar is fake sugar. LOL My kids love Chocolate milk and YooHoos...I am going to see if there is recipe for it just because I have nothing better to do. LOL. I hope your Resurrection Sunday was wonderful. How are the kids?

  3. Well I hate white sugar and fake sugar to be honest. I was meaning you flavoring your own tea with herbs! LOL LOL LOL Thats too funny you thought I meant crystal light! I don't give fake sugar to the kids! LOL I make a peach tea, yum just decaf tea made how you like it then add frozen peaches or a little peach nectar. Also strawberry lemonade again real lemons made into lemonade and real strawberry puree! Then we do lots of fresh fruit or frozen fruit smoothies, and you can do those with no milk just water and fruit a little pure maple syrup. My kids love those too!
